Virtual Private Network (VPN)

What is a VPN?

A virtual private network (VPN) enables a network-connected device to send and receive data across a public network (usually the Internet) as if it were connected to a private network (usually the business network). In simpler terms, it allows a device to connect to a network and benefit from its functionality and security, without being directly connected to that network.

In CEDP VPN connections are used to allow staff to work at home, enabling interaction with systems normally only available on-site at schools. This is accomplished using the application Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, which can be installed on either a PC or a Mac computer.

How do I use it?

Installing the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client

The client cannot be installed from within the CEDP network. The client must be installed on a separate network, e.g. from home or using mobile hotspot.

The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client can be downloaded from https://vpnparra.catholic.edu.au for both the Mac and Windows platform. Once on this site it will take the user through a series of simple prompts to install the client to the machine.

General Use

The client will not function within the CEDP network. The connection can only be made when the device is connected to an external network, e.g. from home or using mobile hotspot.

  1. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client on the device.
  2. When prompted for an address to connect to, type 'vpnparra.catholic.edu.au' and click Connect.
  3. When prompted, sign in with your CEDP username and password, then click OK.
  4. Once connected, an icon with a closed lock will display in your task bar.
  5. You can now operate the machine as if it was connected to the CEDP network.
  6. Once access is no longer required, right-click on the icon and click Disconnect.
