What is macOS?

macOS (i.e. Macintosh Operating System) is a closed source Operating System designed for Apple's fleet of desktop and laptop computers. Some examples include:

  • iMac's
  • Mac Mini's
  • MacBook Air's
  • MacBook Pro's

Through it's history, there have been over 16 major releases of macOS (i.e. previously OS X) each with their own list of patches and minor releases. The previous versions of macOS are listed below:

  • Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah
  • Mac OS X 10.1 Puma
  • Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar
  • Mac OS X 10.3 Panther
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger
  • Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
  • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
  • Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
  • Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
  • OS X 10.9 Mavericks
  • OS X 10.10 Yosemite
  • OS X 10.11 El Capitan
  • macOS 10.12 Sierra
  • macOS 10.13 High Sierra
  • macOS 10.14 Mojave
  • macOS 10.15 Catalina

Currently, CEDP's Mobile Management Systems allow for the latest 3 major releases of macOS to be enrolled securely within the network. As of 2019, these OS's are macOS 10.13 High Sierra, macOS 10.14 Mojave, macOS 10.15 Catalina.

Mac OS Bootable USB

Apple no longer completely supports this, and they prefer using software updates.

However they can be useful for:

  • Installing a clean install of MacOS
  • Downgrading or updating MacOS
